How are these mills made?

The multi-step process undertaken to produce these mills is outlined below.

Stabilization
The wood in your mill has undergone stabilization which involves heating it at 105ºC (220ºF) for an extended period of time to get it as near 0% moisture content as possible. Once cooled the wood is placed in a vacuum chamber filled with stabilizing resin. Full vacuum is applied until bubbling stops. The vacuum is then released and the wood soaks for at least twice as long as it was under vacuum. The final step in stabilization is to bake the wood at 88ºC (190ºF) for 4 hours to catalyze the resin.

Casting and Finishing
Once cooled the wood is placed in a mold, surrounded with small pieces of wood and resin left over from previous mills and urethane casting resin is then added to fill the voids. This is then put under pressure in a pressure tank for 4 hours to collapse bubbles. The resultant block is then trimmed, mounted on the lathe and turned, drilled and sanded. Multiple coats of an environmentally friendly finish are applied over a number of days before the mill is buffed, waxed and assembled.
